Dr Ralph Hawkins (MD LLM FRCPC) is the Site Lead for General Internal Medicine at the Calgary South Health Campus. He is an advocate for Lyme Disease and the improved diagnostic guidelines in Canada.
In order to see him, you need a referral from an MD or your family doctor, and (unfortunately) as with any "specialist" there is a fairly long wait to see him.
Part of the "divine intervention" I referred to in my original post is the fact that Theresa was actually able to see Dr Hawkins. Had we gone to a different hospital, we would not have been seen. Had we asked for the consultation on a different day or while Dr Hawkins was off shift, we would not have seen him. Had Theresa's symptoms not been declining so rapidly, we would not have seen him.
Despite the bad luck of being bit by an infected tick, we are certainly grateful for our good fortune in finding a doctor, and for this reason - we will fight pay it forward and build more bridges to facilitate change in our Canadian Diagnostic guidelines!!!
Thank you to the open minded Neurologist who made the phone call at the right time, and thank you to Dr Hawkins for saving my wife's life!!! If only there were more like you.
